Why are more and more doctors
considering Body Mass Index a vital sign?
At one time,
people thought that the primary drawback of being overweight was how it
affected one's appearance. Well, we've now learned that the
consequences of being overweight can be much more serious.
Recent
studies show that people with a BMI of 27 or more have a higher rise
of develping a number of serious health conditions, such as type 2
diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
So, how can you determine your BMI?
BMI (Body
Mass Index) is a measure of weight that takes height into account.
You can determine your BMI by referring to the chart below. Look
on the side for your height. Then simply run your finger across
horizontally to the box corresponding to your weight. In that box,
you will see your BMI measure. The important thing to realize is
that anyone with a BMI of 27 or above is considered overweight.

is entirely fat. Without a brain, you might look good, but all you could
do is run for public office." ---George Bernard Shaw |
